Curious about Beauty School?

Curious about Beauty School?

So, you are thinking about going to Beauty School?  Well, it’s easier than you think to enroll and begin a new, exciting and profitable career.

It is important, however, to do your “homework” before committing to take a new direction in your life.

First, let’s take a look back at the history of beauty schools and how the field of cosmetology has evolved and changed with each decade, starting with the 1920’s.

  • Ever since the Roaring 20’s, the field of cosmetology has expanded into a highly professionalized industry.
  • The professionalization of cosmetology occurred with the start of the 1930’s.
  • Women who worked in cosmetology “shops” were often the only ones who had access to beauty products, well into the 1940’s, and the demand for cosmetologists grew so clients could use the products.
  • With World War II women wanted simple haircuts and the “Bob”, that started in the 1920’s was reborn.
  • When the men started returning from war, women were looking for a more glamorous look into the 1950’s.
  • About this time the “pony tail” also became very popular.
  • Cosmetology, as a profession, literally took off in the 1950’s as stylists started to earn better wages and became more respected within the community.
  • In the 1960’s cosmetologists became more highly sought after for their ability to proves and color hair.  Blonde hair was highly desired and the short hair of the “Twiggy look” developed and then the longer hair popularized by Cher.
  • In the 1970’s men started to visit a cosmetologist to get the “feather look” as well as the look popularized by Farrah Fawcett.
  • 1980’s brought in teased hair… like Madonna.  Permanent waves were popular again and professional women looked to the flipped out hair like Mary Tyler Moore.

Ever since the 1980’s, cosmetology has become recognized as a serious profession and a smart career move for men and women to desired to become more financially independent.

The modern era requires looks that women find difficult to achieve on their own.

  • Hair Extensions
  • High lights and low lights
  • Creative color and cuts

Accreditation standards are more rigorous than ever before in the history of cosmetology. While a cosmetologist may have only paid a nominal fee for training in the 1940’s, now a beauty school enrollee must undergo extensive coursework and pass a detailed examination in order to receive a license to work in the field.

Today, there are many diversified trade schools, offering varied courses beside Cosmetology. Such as Fashion Design, Spa/Salon Management, Permanent Makeup, to name just a few.
