4711 is a traditional German Eau de Cologne by Mäurer & Wirtz. Because it has been produced in Cologne since at least 1792, it is allowed to use the geographical indication Original Eau de Cologne.
The original 4711 Eau de Cologne was made available to the public in 1792 in Germany and went on to become an iconic fragrance. It is named after the house number where it was first produced. It was manufactured by Wilhelm Mülhens (1762-1841) that apparently was inspired from another Eau de Cologne produced in Cologne, Germany by an Italian Johann Maria Farina (1685–1766). Some consider Mr. Farina the true creator of the first Eau de Cologne. The words Eau de Cologne have become synonymous with any light and refreshing fragrance and generally lower concentrated perfumed toilet waters that people rather use to refresh their senses instead of leaving perfumed trails.It is considered the first commercial Cologne.
